What about organic food?
Probably the most discussed aspect regarding the foods that are grown in traditional farms, and that are considered to be harmful for health, is about the pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers and if the aliments you are eating contains them or not. No one wants to eat foods that have any of those chemical elements, but sometimes the most important aspects are ignored by many people.
The soil is usually treated with different chemical substances, fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides with the purpose to help the vegetables grow quicker and bigger. But, such way to treat the soil determines at the same time the decrease of the micro-nutrient levels contained by the plants.
In organic farming things are a little bit different. Such chemicals are not used to treat the soil, which is actually healthier this way and the plants that grow in it have high nutritional levels. A superior nutrition level means a higher quantity of vitamins and minerals than the one contained in conventional foods.
Buying everything that is considered to be organic food has become nowadays more of a trend. In its basic concept, organic food means any food that has grown without chemicals or genetic improvements. Starting with 1997, specialists have set some rules that are considered to be valid when it comes to establishing if a certain food is organic or not. The notion “organic farming” has been used since then.
Regarding organic foods there are many beliefs. Some consider that they can actually prevent different types of cancers, and mostly breast cancer. Others believe that a diet based on organic foods can maintain your health for a long period of tine. However, none of them were proven to be true, at least not yet.11
