Westwood ends Woods 282-week reign to get the top spot

The two ‘Woods’ would fight until the last tour of the season to keep, respectively get the top spot. Tiger Woods dropped from the leader position, this being taken now by England’s Lee Westwood. Thus, American’s hegemony set after a 281-week reign. A couple of days ago, German Martin Kaymer was also in cards for the top spot at the end of the year, but this finished the Andalucian Masters with a closing 75 for seven-over-par tally of 291. There is no doubt this is Westwood’s highlight. According to Europe’s Ryder Cup team captain Montgomery, this claimed days ago that both Westwood and Kaymer would deserve the top spot. Monday, the Briton would be named though the new leader.

Said Montgomerie: “Both Martin and Lee are deserving of the number one title. I would say they are number one and two in the world. You can’t knock Martin’s and Lee’s current form. This world competition being so close is fantastic and great for golf, especially with Phil Mickelson close behind and other Europeans coming through to join that band.” Euphoric Westwood couldn’t wait for this moment to come, to be ‘the best on the planet’. He thanked the whole Ryder Cup team, as well as Martin Kaymer sent him a text in which he was congratulating the English for the achievement. The German was just one step from ending the year top spot. He needed to finish at least second in Spain in order to claim the leadership, but he failed. The German started his campaign with rounds of 74, 72, 70, but saw himself disappointed in Andalucia. Kaymer added in the same time that he didn’t play differently with this pressure on him. But on the contrary, he tried to remain focus on the tournaments to put the leader position in the back of his mind.

Finally, Westwood’s Ryder Cup team-mate declared happy for the Briton, labeling him as the greatest guy on the European Tour. Now, the main aim for the 37-year-old Lee, who hasn’t played since Europe’s victory over the United States in the Ryder Cup, is to maintain his top spot. The Briton finished this season second at both the British Open and US Masters after he also equaled Arnold Palmer’s record of 12 straight matches unbeaten, achievement set at Valhalla two years ago.
