Wozniacki becomes the 20th player ever to lead the WTA rankings

Beijing’s third round didn’t bring a simple common win for the Dane. It also came with the biggest present any player longs for. She became new world’s number one and it won’t be such a big tragedy if she exits from the next round. She would allow herself to do that. But probably she won’t be doing this. There is no doubt Caroline Wozniacki will struggle to be completely crowned in Beijing and win the tournament. It would be her sixth of the season, but even so, something will be missing. She must take a Grand Slam, too. And that soon as possible.

However, the young Danish player overcomes Serena Williams who led the WTA table for a long period. American’s hegemony has just been broken by the Dane who was just one win from becoming the new number one. Wozniacki ousted Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to get her 56th win of the season. She became also the 20th player to go top of the WTA rankings ever. A jubilant Wozniacki radiated at the end of the third round to reveal her dream came true. She was also accompanied by Tina Turner’s ‘Simply the best’ song. Still, the Dane is the third player to reach the pinnacle of tennis without winning any of the Grand Slam tournaments so far. Her father was also in Beijing in order to witness daughter’s greatest performance. “He told me to try to get a lot of first serves in. He said she’s still there, that she’s a good player. So I should just keep fighting no matter if she comes back or not,” Wozniacki said before looking aware of her main goal of taking a Grand. “A grand slam is definitely my next goal now that I’ve achieved becoming number one in the world – one of my big dreams. I’m still young, so I still have a lot of time ahead of me. I’ve had a fantastic season, and I think I can be proud of this. It’s an incredible feeling for me right now to say that I’m number one in the world,” the Danish player added.

Next she will play former number one Ana Ivanovic. The two will meet in the Chinese Open quarter finals as Caroline starts as main favorite. Meanwhile, Vera Zvonareva is playing Italian Francesca Schiavone on the other half of the table. So the Russian is still the main opponent for taking Beijing’s title. However, Ivanovic commented over Caroline’s performance. “I remember when they told me I was going to be number one, and I was very, very excited about it. But I remember I was even more hungry to win a grand slam. Grand slams definitely bring more satisfaction. If I’m never number one again but win another few grand slams, I’ll be more than happy,” the Serbian, who ousted Russian Elena Dementieva in the third round, said.
