At least 30 people were shot dead in Sanaa, capital of Yemen, as the governmental forces opened fire on demonstrators against the regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh on Friday, soon after the Islamic prayer.

Medics told BBC that a group of protestors gathered near the university and were targeted by armed men positioned on the nearby construction in Taghyeer Square.

President Saleh was expected to address the people on television shortly after this bloody accident while tens of thousands of people were gathered in all the major cities of the country protesting against government and demanding the ouster of the president.

Yemen is one of the Arab nations whose population protests against the presidential regime and the poor living condition.

Protest has begun here almost at the same time as the ones in Egypt and Tunisia, which resulted in the ouster of the respective presidents.

Since the inception of unrest, President Ali Abdullah Saleh has promised reforms and reassured the people that he was not going to run for a new term as president but that did not seem to have impressed people too much.

Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the Arab world with a very energetic secessionist movement on both ends of the country, north and south, and an intense activity of Al Qaeda.
